Definition - What does Solid Master Bushing mean?

A Solid Master Bushing is a tool which allows a derrick hand to fit in various insert bowls which help to set various slip configurations to handle drill pipe, casing, and drill collars. The tool is an important part of handling tools and is located within the rotary table on a rig. Solid master bushings are easily accessible and removable from the rotary table.

There are various models or types of solid master bushings which are used as per the size of rigs and the drilling requirements of an operator. Some of them are listed below:

  • Hinged Master Bushings – These are available for the rotary table size ranging from 49.5 inch to 60.5 inch and are rated for a maximum of 750 tons.
  • Hinged Pin Drive Master Casing Bushing – These types of master bushings are available for the rotary table size ranging from 37.5 inch to 49.5 inches.
  • Pin Drive Master Casing Bushing (Solid Body) – These are available for the rotary table size ranging from 20.5 inch to 37.5 inches.
  • Pin Drive Master Casing Bushing (Split Body) – These are available for the rotary table size ranging from 17.5 inch to 27.5 inches.
All of the listed master bushing are rated to hold a 500 tons to 750 tons weight. The master bushings are generally designed to adapt a Kelly Bushing safety guard.
