Definition - What does Sling Psychrometer mean?
A Sling Psychrometer is a type of hygrometer that has two thermometers attached to a rope or handle and is used to measure the water vapor or moisture content in the atmosphere. It has a wet bulb thermometer and a dry bulb thermometer which are connected on one end by a bearing so that the frame can rotate freely. The instrument is rotated in the air for about a minute to determine humidity levels.
Petropedia explains Sling Psychrometer
Sling psychrometers are mainly used in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry in commercial air conditioning systems. They are also used in meteorology to determine the atmospheric humidity of an environment that surrounds a given metal application. This instrument is helpful when the humidity levels in a particular region need to be measured, especially in areas where there is a high risk of corrosion to cost-intensive industrial infrastructure.
This instrument measures the humidity level on the wet bulb thermometer scale. In order to know the moisture content in the region, the sling psychrometer apparatus is rotated freely in that region until a constant value is attained in the wet bulb thermometer scale.
