Definition - What does Mole Percent mean?

Mole Percent is the total ratio of moles in a particular component to that of the total moles present in a mixture. Mole Percent can be calculated by multiplying the mole fraction by 100. Generally, a mixture's Mole Percent is equal to the 100% mole. Mole fraction can be converted to Mole Percent by multiplying it with 100 and the Mole Percent can be converted to mole fraction by dividing it by 100. Mole Percent is also sometimes referred to as mole amount percent, mole amount, mole percentage, molar percentage or molar proportion. It's abbreviation is n/n%.

A mole is a standard unit of measurement used for the amount of substance. A mole is basically the total amount of the number of elements or entities in a chemical substance. These elements can be electrons, atoms, ions or molecules. Mole percentage or molar percentage can be calculated by multiplying the mole fraction by 100. To calculate the mole or molar fraction, the following formula is used:

xi = ni / ntot

Here xi is mole fraction, ni is the total amount of a constituent and ntot is the total amount of the constituents present in a mixture.

Once molar fraction is calculated, mole percentage can be calculated by multiplying the molar fraction by 100.
