Definition - What does Meter Reading mean?

Meter Reading is the act of collecting datum from a meter or an equivalent device that represents the data about the physical changes. In simple terms, when a meter is used to measure something for example, liquid, electricity or gas, it is called a Meter Reading. Usually, a manual meter contains a dial with a needle, in which the needle points to the values that are present on the dial. On the other hand, an electronic meter simply displays the Meter Reading in form of numbers.

In the petroleum industry, the act of metering is very important as it helps in monitoring the produced fluids and gases. Therefore, Meter Reading is a regular task for engineers as it helps them to note down the data and analyze the difference. Apart from repairing and maintaining the meters offshore or onshore, a meterman also takes the meter reading.
