Definition - What does Loss of Head mean?

Loss of Head is the dissipation of energy in any moving fluid because of friction. More energy is also dissipated in the turbulence for the high Reynolds number flows. Loss of Head is known as head loss. The head loss can be divided into two different categories – major losses and minor losses. Major losses are associated with the loss of energy per length of the pipe while the minor losses are associated with the valves, blends, fittings, etc.

To make a given volume of fluid move through a duct or pipe, a definite amount of energy is required. Some of the energy is lost because of the resistance encountered when moving the fluid. This resistance to move the fluid is known as Loss of Head. The major and minor head losses are the two categories of head loss. The most common equation which is used to measure the major Loss of Head is Darcy-Weisbach equation. It is observed that the minor losses exceed the major losses easily in the short pipe systems that have comparatively large number of fittings and bends. Loss of Head is majorly as a result of various reasons like friction on the wall of the pipe, turbulence or swirl near the diaphragms, outlets, inlets, changes of section and bends.
