Definition - What does Kick Tolerance mean?

Kick Tolerance is the highest volume of a gas kick in barrels which can help in successfully shutting the well without causing any formation damage. It is the function of the formation breakdown pressure and the formation pressure. It deals with two concepts – as maximum kick volume and as maximum pore equivalent weight. It is an essential factor that helps drilling engineers to form various frameworks in the development phase of the well like open hole lengths, casing depths, etc.

Kick Tolerance is considered as a beneficial safety factor that helps to prevent well control problems. It is important to drilling engineers, yet it has aroused both misunderstanding and confusion in the drilling industry. When drilled in more challenging conditions and a more timid approach is used, it takes only small variation in the calculations to result to premature abandonment of the well. This mostly leads to discussions during the drilling operations on the safety of the operations. It is also stated as the maximum increase in the weight of the mud that is granted by pressure integrity test of a casing shoe without any influx in the well.
