Definition - What does Jackup Drilling Rig mean?

Jackup Drilling Rig, also known as a self-elevating unit or jackup rig, is a mobile unit which contains a buoyant hull that is fitted with various movable legs adept in raising the hull over the sea surface. The buoyant hull allows the transportation of unit and its machinery to the desired locations. At the drilling site, the hull is raised to the desired elevation above the surface of the sea supported by the seabed. Its legs are designed for penetrating the seabed and can be fitted by enlarged footings or sections, or can be attached to the bottom mat.

A Jackup Drilling Rig is used as a wind farm service, offshore and exploratory drilling platform. This is the most common type of offshore drilling rig. It is towered to the drilling site with the help of a hull, which is a water tight barge floating in the surface of the water. It is then lowered to the desired water level with the help of legs drawn out from the hull. When the rig arrives at the drilling site, the legs are jacked downwards by the crew through water into the seafloor. This is the main source of support for the rig that holds the deck properly above the waves. They are of three types Jackup Drilling Rigs:

  • Turbine Installation Vessel
