Definition - What does Ethylene Glycol mean?

Ethylene Glycol is produced from Ethylene with Ethylene Oxide as an intermediate. Ethylene Oxide reacts with water to produce Ethylene Glycol and can be explained with a chemical equation: C2H4O + H2O = HO-CH2Ch2-OH. It is used as a raw material in the manufacture of polyester Fibers and Fabric Glycol. It is also used in some industrial applications like antifreeze formulations, but in very small amounts. Ethylene Glycol is used to remove water vapor from natural gas.

Ethylene Glycol, also known as Ethylene Alcohol is an important part of oil and gas industries. Due to its antifreeze characteristics, Ethylene Glycol is used in natural gas pipelines when they go under the sea where temperatures are extremely low. While in the pipelines under the sea, Ethylene Glycol prevents blockages from freezing temperatures and aids in the reduction of corrosion. It is also used in Plastic industries as it is an important predecessor to polyester fibers. Ethylene Glycol takes ten days to break down in air and few weeks in soil and water. When Ethylene Glycol containing products are diffused, it enters the environment especially in airports where it is used in de-icing agents for runways and airplanes.
