Definition - What does Angular Velocity mean?

Angular Velocity is the rate of change of the vector quantity that specifies angular speed of an object and axis about which it is rotating. Its length or magnitude is directly proportional to angular speed which is measured in the same units. It can be applied to those objects that are moving along a circular path. The direction of its vector is perpendicular to the plane of rotation in the direction that is generally specified by the right hand rule.

Angular Velocity is the measurement of the rate of change of the angular position of an object at a particular time period. It can be represented in radians or degrees per time with straightforward conversions that allow students or scientists to use degrees of radians per time in a rotational situation, whether it is a yo-yo or a Ferris wheel.

Linear velocity is more common than angular velocity as it applies only to the object along the circular path. For example, race car on its circular track, roulette wheel or ball or the Ferris wheel, they all have angular velocity. When an object travels along a circular path, the central angle which corresponds to its position on the circle changes. Angular velocity which is represented by "w" is rate of change of the angle per time period.
