Definition - What does Deep Seismic Sounding mean?
Deep Seismic Sounding is the process of preparing a seismic profile of the layer of rocks located in the earth's surface near the earth’s crust. This seismic profile is then analyzed to understand the continuous formations as well as any discontinuous hydrocarbon formations. The distance that can be covered during deep seismic sounding process can vary from 5 kilometers to 75 kilometers down the earth's surface or 3 miles to 45 miles rock thickness.

In deep seismic sounding process, seismic energy is projected into the ground and the energy that is reflected is recorded. Many shots and recording are taken so that the seismic lines can then be processed to produce a picture of the subsurface structure. The picture of the subsurface structure consists of various process lines. These process lines can be either displayed in “wiggle traces format” or more commonly as variable density displays. Reflections of interest, typically those that are strong and laterally continuous can be colored up using interactive seismic software programs. When the grid of the lines has been consistently interpreted, contour maps can be made of the surfaces for interpretations.
